According to AASHTO, an engineering organization similar to ICPI, except that it's specifications are utilized by state DOT's for street, road and highway construction across the nation, the recommended thickness of 2A modified crushed stone base for a pedestrian segmental pavement like interlocking brick pavers is 4-6". Because we always want to err on the side of durability and stability, our base preps are always at least 6" thick. We also use a geotextile (also called "geo-blanket") in all circumstances when the soil conditions present a need for separation between soils and crushed stone. The pavers are then laid atop a one inch layer of Tilcon Concrete sand.
The interlocking pavers we use atop our engineered base preparations are the best available; E.P. Henry and Hanover, and they come with an all inclusive, industry leading 5 year warranty.
We'd love the opportunity to speak with you about your upcoming paver project. If you live in Pennsylvania's Berks, Bucks, Chester, Lancaster, Montgomery or York counties, please give us a call.
